“We need the momentum of our support (to Ukraine, ed) change,” said outgoing NATO boss Stoltenberg on Wednesday upon arrival in Brussels. “We must ensure reliable and predictable security assistance to Ukraine for the long term, so that we rely less on voluntary contributions and more on NATO commitments. Less of short-term offers and more of multi-year commitments.”

This morning it was announced that the 32 NATO members in Brussels are negotiating, among other things, a fund of 100 billion euros to support the government in Kiev for the next five years. Stoltenberg did not want to go into details, but does acknowledge that there is a proposal on the table to make the aid ‘more robust’ and ‘predictable’. This should, among other things, cover NATO against the feared (significant) reduction in American support if Donald Trump were to return to the White House.

“Russia is increasing the pressure along the front,” the NATO chief emphasized. Aid must therefore be arranged differently, more focused on the long term. “So that we become less dependent on voluntary contributions.” That is why, he believes, NATO’s role in coordinating aid and providing training must be increased.

According to Stoltenberg, no decisions will be made in the coming days. This will happen during a summit in July in Washington where the heads of state and government of the NATO countries will meet to celebrate NATO’s 75th anniversary.
