A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan Wednesday morning.

A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan Wednesday morning. The tremors of the quake were felt till Taipei and Hualien cities. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) informed that the seismic event was recorded at 7:58 pm, per local time. The epicenter of the earthquake, as per the initial reports, was near Hualien City.

The quake that struck Taiwan’s major cities early in the morning was 10 km beneath the epicenter. Notably, because they occur closer to the surface, shallow earthquakes are felt more intense than deeper ones. The exact magnitude and other geographical indicators of the seismic event may vary after the expert analysis.

Meanwhile, an advisory to evacuate the coastal regions close to Okinawa’s southern prefecture has been issued by Japan after the powerful earthquake strike. The seismic event recorded near Taiwan prompted a tsunami warning as well.

According to the Japan’s Meteorological Agency, the island nation is expected to face a tsunami of up to 3 meters reaching its southwestern coast around 10 am, per local time, (0100 GMT).
