Ticket sales for the film Oppenheimer, about the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic bomb, grossed $2.5 million in its opening weekend in Japanese cinemas. The American film was the most visited film after the Japanese films Strange House and Haikyu!!, reports trade magazine Variety.

With 2.5 million dollars (about 2.3 million euros), Oppenheimer is the American film with the best opening weekend in Japan this year. Previously, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Dune: Part Two grossed $1.6 million and $1.3 million respectively in the first weekend after their premiere.

Director Christopher Nolan’s film premiered in the United States eight months ago. It often takes longer for a film to be released in Japan, but with Oppenheimer it was questionable whether it would be shown in the country at all. Because of the subject, the film may have been sensitive in Japan, which was bombed twice with an American atomic bomb during the Second World War.

Nolan’s most visited film in Japan is 2010’s Inception, which grossed a total of $42 million. Tenet (2020) and Dunkirk (2017) also did well at the box office in Japanese cinemas with 25 million and 14.8 million dollars respectively.
