Amazon is investing another $2.75 billion in AI start-up Anthropic. Anthropic is known for its chatbot Claude, a direct competitor of ChatGPT. Amazon previously also invested in the start-up.

Amazon invested $1.25 billion in Anthropic last September. The company then indicated that it would start a strategic partnership with the start-up, with Anthropic, for example, using chips from Amazon and AWS becoming the start-up’s main cloud provider. Furthermore, Amazon said at the time that it wants to invest a total of $4 billion in Anthropic. This total amount will be achieved with the new investment of $2.75 billion. As part of this investment, Amazon will retain its minority stake in the startup.

Earlier this month, Anthropic released the Claude 3 language model, which is said to outperform competing language models such as GPT-4 and Gemini from OpenAI and Google. Claude 3 can summarize texts of up to 150,000 words, which is twice as many words as its predecessor. The third generation of the language model can also understand more context, process longer instructions and is more accurate.

In addition to Amazon, Google parent company Alphabet has also invested in Anthropic. In February last year, Alphabet invested $300 million in the start-up. Last October, the company pledged to raise an additional $2 billion, including $500 million at once and the remaining $1.5 billion over time.
