Israel still wants to send a delegation to the US
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to send a delegation of diplomats to the United States. On Monday, Netanyahu canceled a planned visit to the US at the last minute.
The Israeli Prime Minister was then furious that the US had not used its veto against an adopted UN Security Council resolution. In it, the Security Council called for a ceasefire in Gaza. The US abstained from voting.
But Israel has now asked the American government to reschedule the visit to the US, American officials report to the news agency Reuters. The consultation concerns the possible Israeli ground offensive in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip. The US does not want Israel to launch that attack, for fear of a humanitarian disaster.
The countries are looking for a date for the visit. The visit may take place as early as next week, Israeli officials say Reuters.
Deaths in airstrike in Rafah
At least eleven people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Rafah on Wednesday, Gaza health authorities said. Four houses were hit by bombs. A news agency reporter AP saw bodies of several victims arriving at a hospital.
Many Gazans have fled from other cities to Rafah in recent months. The refugees worry whether Israel will also attack Rafah. The Israeli army has indicated several times that it wants to conduct ground operations in Rafah. According to Israel, these attacks should be aimed at members of Hamas.
Israel is also targeting targets in Lebanon
Israel also bombed targets in Lebanon on Wednesday. Israel said the attack targeted the militant movement Hezbollah, which has ties to Hamas.
At least seven people were killed in the attack. In response, Hezbollah fired rockets from Lebanon at Israel. One person was killed in Israel.
UNICEF: ‘212 schools hit by bombs’
Since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas, 212 schools have been hit by bombs in Gaza. This is evident from research by UNICEF, the United Nations children’s rights organization.
165 of these schools are located in an area that the Israeli army had designated as an evacuation zone. Satellite images show that 53 schools have been destroyed. The Gaza Strip has a total of 563 school buildings.
