Moroccan radio presenter Mohamed Bousfiha, better known as Momo, was summoned to court in Casablanca on Tuesday. He is accused of spreading false information during a live broadcast.
Momo and two other people involved appeared before the prosecutor on Tuesday, Barlamane reports. The indictment states that Momo deliberately staged a theft in his radio program. During the broadcast, Momo claimed that he witnessed a mugging. This fake news was then reproduced by various media for hours until authorities confirmed that it was a fabricated story.

The Public Prosecution Service started an investigation into “reporting a fictitious crime”, “dissemination of false information via computer systems” and “insulting a public institution”.

The findings of this investigation were submitted to the court on March 25. Momo risks severe penalties if the media regulation watchdog initiates proceedings against him. He was released after paying a bail of 100,000 dirhams.
