Ukraine has qualified for the European Football Championship for the fourth consecutive time. In the play-off match against Iceland, they turned a deficit into a narrow victory: 2-1. At Euro 2024 it is an opponent of the Red Devils.
Iceland’s battle plan in Ukraine was clear from the first whistle: a compact and low block and waiting for the counter-attack. Ukraine gained possession of the ball, but had to take a hit after half an hour.
Gudmundsson, who already scored a hat trick against Israel, followed a nice shot with a nice pirouette: 0-1. Iceland had taken its intended lead and retreated even further into its hedgehog position.
Ukraine only found an opening in the Icelandic fortress after the break, not coincidentally on a counter. Tsyhankov dribbled in and equalized with a dry shot into the bottom corner.
With renewed courage, Ukraine set out in search of qualification, but the distance between the lines became too great. Suddenly Iceland had chances and Real Madrid keeper Loenin had to keep Thorsteinsson (OHL) from making it 1-2.
Just when Iceland was thinking about more than defending, Ukraine struck in the final phase. Moedryk (Chelsea) was free on the edge of the box and kicked Ukraine to the European Championship. The joy of the players and fans of Ukraine was great.
Opponent of the Red Devils at Euro 2024
For Ukraine it is the fourth consecutive qualification for the final round of the European Championship, having also done so in 2012, 2016 and 2020. At Euro 2024 in Germany, Ukraine will be in a group with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania.
The qualification is also a heartening moment for all football fans in Ukraine. Due to the war with Russia, the Ukrainian team had to play its home games in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland in this campaign.
