UN Security Council calls for a pause in fighting in Gaza, US does not vote | War Israel and Hamas

The call for a ceasefire applies to Ramadan, which still lasts two weeks. This is stated in the resolution adopted on Monday.

The US abstained from voting because the country did not agree with everything. For example, the resolution did not condemn Hamas. But the US did not use its veto, allowing the Security Council to call for a pause in fighting.

The resolution also emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance and strengthen the protection of civilians throughout the Gaza Strip.

The decision, which is binding under international law, increases international pressure on Israel and Hamas. The only question remains whether the call will influence the decisions of the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Hamas on the further course of the war.

Netanyahu is furious over the call and has canceled his planned trip to Washington. The Israeli Prime Minister had previously threatened to do this if the US did not use its veto power. Washington is Israel’s strongest ally. The country has already resisted the call for a ceasefire three times by using the veto.

It is the first time that the UN Security Council has called for an immediate pause in fighting. Until now, the council has been unable to make an appeal because members with a veto right have been obstructive.

On Friday, Russia, China and Algeria voted down a United States resolution stating the need for a ceasefire. Russia felt that the resolution did not go far enough, because it was not an explicit call for a ceasefire.

According to Russia, this resolution in practice gave Israel the green light for a future attack on the border town of Rafah. China did not agree at the time, saying the resolution did not meet the “expectations of the international community”.
