The One UI 6.1 update for the Galaxy S22 series has just started in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe. This brings, among other things, Galaxy AI to the devices. Moreover, this finally fixes the burn-in bug that came to the devices with One UI 6.0.

Galaxy S22 update: Galaxy AI and One UI 6.1

For a long time, it seemed that the Galaxy S22 would not be eligible for the Galaxy AI features that Samsung had launched with the Galaxy S24 series. Yet the South Koreans changed their minds early in the spring. And now the time has come.

You can now download and install the 3 GB update to firmware version S90*BXXU9EXE1 on the Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra. This includes the improvements of One UI 6.1, and almost all Galaxy AI functions, such as:

  • Generating background images
  • Background with photo environment (Photo ambient wallpaper)
  • Generative photo editor
  • Circle to search (Circle to search)
  • Telephone (Call assist): live translation of telephone conversations
  • Keyboard (Writing assistant): translate messages and get help writing them
  • Interpreter: translation of conversations
  • Samsung Notes: (Note assist): automatically take notes, summarize, generate titles and more
  • Voice Recorder (Transcript assist): transcribe voice recordings into text, and summarize them
  • Internet (Browsing assist): translate and summarize web pages

The only Galaxy S24 AI feature that isn’t coming to the Galaxy S22 is Instant Slow Motion for slow but smooth video playback.

Furthermore, you also get the non-AI features of One UI 6.1, such as a Always On Display that shows background images. There are new clock widgets for the lock screen, gesture navigation is overhauled, and the animations in the interface are smoother.

‘Burn-in bug’ has finally been resolved

Furthermore, today’s upgrade also includes a fix for a bug that came to the Galaxy S22 series with Android 14 and One UI 6.0. The so-called ‘burn-in bug’ has now been definitively fixed in One UI 6.1.

One UI 6.1 for the Galaxy S21 has also launched

The One UI 6.1 upgrade for the Galaxy S21 series will also start in Europe today. However, on the phones in this series, updates do not roll out everywhere in Europe at once. So we will have to wait and see until the upgrade also becomes available on Dutch devices. If not later today, then undoubtedly sometime next week.

We also expect the same upgrade to start shortly for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 – either later today or next week.

Availability

You can now download the One UI 6.1 upgrade directly on the unbranded Galaxy S22 and S22 Ultra in the Netherlands, Belgium and the rest of Europe. We also expect it on the S22+ in the foreseeable future. If you don’t want to wait for your phone to find the update automatically, check availability manually Settings -> Software update -> Download and install.

Do you have this upgrade on your Galaxy S22? Is everything working properly, or are new bugs emerging?

(Thanks, Peter, Marinus and Bram!)
