Tech giant Apple has announced the M4, a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) built with second-generation 3-nanometer technology. The power source will make its debut in the brand new iPad Pro, but will also power other Apple devices in the coming months.

According to Apple, the M4 is again slightly more energy efficient than its predecessor. “If you compare it with the latest PC chip in a thin and light laptop, the M4 delivers the same performance with only a quarter of the power,” the manufacturer claims. The chip also includes an improved display engine, which should ensure faster and clearer images on the new iPad Pro.

New neural engine

The CPU has up to 10 cores (including four performance cores and six efficiency cores), and the 10-core GPU builds on M3’s GPU architecture. This ensures that for the first time the iPad has features such as: dynamic caching, mesh shading and ray tracing with hardware acceleration.

Also worth mentioning is the improved neural engine, the IP block in the chip that ensures the acceleration of AI workloads. This engine achieves up to 38 trillion operations per second, making it sixty times faster than Apple’s first neural engine in the A11 Bionic chip, which was released in 2017.
