Older Samsung Galaxy phones will receive an essential 4G update one of these days. This sometimes concerns devices that were released seven years ago, such as the Galaxy A5 (2017).

The 4G update should ensure that older Galaxy phones continue to work on 4G mobile networks. This requires that the phones support the correct frequency bands. These frequency bands change over time. Without updates from Samsung, these devices would no longer work on (some) 4G networks over time.

It is striking that the electronics giant is even rolling out 4G updates for the older Galaxy A5 (2017). This device has not received software updates for several years. However, the A5 will also receive the 4G update, reports Galaxy Club. The website reports that the update is already available for the Dutch version of the device. More devices are expected to be equipped with the 4G patch in the near future. In concrete terms, this concerns Galaxy phones that were released in or after 2016.

In addition to the patch for mobile networks, the software on these devices remains unchanged. So no additional changes have been made.

Not just older devices

Samsung is not only rolling out the 4G update to older Galaxy smartphones. More recent Galaxy A and Galaxy S devices have also received the firmware updates. For new models, the patch is accompanied by the rollout of security patches. It is difficult to predict when the update will appear on your Galaxy phone.

Once the update is available, it is important to install it as soon as possible. The update ensures an optimal connection to 4G networks. Have you not received the patch yet? You can manually check for updates via the software updates section in the settings menu.
