Stellar Blade is a beautiful but also quite strange science fiction adventure for the Playstation 5. Beautiful because the game looks beautiful, but the appearance of main character EVE does raise some questions in 2024.

Where goes Stellar Blade about?

The world as we know it is no more. Destroyed by unknown creatures, the globe has been abandoned by what is left of humanity. In a colony somewhere in space, the survivors entrenched themselves and are hatching a way to reclaim the earth.

Who should do that?

So that is the mission of EVE, member of the 7th Airborne Squad. She receives assistance via a drone, which initially gives all kinds of tips about the mission. Pick up items that can help you, search this room to maybe find a code to open a locked gateway, that works. This way you can initially progress quite easily in the game.

What’s nice about it Stellar Blade ?

The design. The game looks great, with beautiful, dark levels on an almost destroyed Earth. The first mission is in an abandoned city – except for the Naytiba, the creatures that have taken our place in this world. You have to defeat them one by one and of course you can become stronger as you conquer more enemies. But the opposition is also gradually becoming more powerful. That fighting is spectacularly depicted. Stellar Blade was made by a Korean studio and exudes its own unique atmosphere. Sometimes it feels like Dark Souls but at other times it is also reminiscent of a game like Death Stranding .

Is the story important?

Absolutely, and that matters Stellar Blade also a very good game. The makers take the time to slowly add more and more details to what actually happened on Earth. This ensures that EVE increasingly turns into a detective – who of course has to fight a life and death battle at every turn. But those fight scenes and the development of the story go nicely parallel. As a player you want to know how things really work. You meet special characters who always shed a different light on what is going on.

And what’s so strange?

The appearance of EVE. Okay, it’s just a game and who Stellar Blade If you don’t want to play, you don’t have to. But after we have seen more diversity in main characters in recent years and more and more room for gender diversity in the stories, we are really going back to the macho days here. Tight-fitting spacesuits that look like they are made of latex, a main character with large breasts that are not concealed and who also has to save the world in high heels without getting a scratch on her pretty face – that feels a bit like retro science fiction…
