The MSQ in particular could have been shorter with a better writer who understands that less is more.

Funny you mention it, because about 2 years ago they streamlined MSQ from the base game (ARR) and cut it down quite a bit.

Later expansions are not too long in terms of story, each expansion has about 50-60 hours of content in terms of MSQ. Here I count from patch X.0 (release expansion) to X.55 (end of story expansion), fairly normal for RPGs like Final Fantasy in general.

The fact that there are now 4 expansions after the base game unfortunately means that you have 250-300 hours of content in the MSQ alone. It’s a lot that way, yes, but when it came out (a patch every 3-4 months) it was quite manageable chunks (in any case, each patch after X.0 is actually only 2-3 hours of content, X.0 is the largest part with about 40 hours).

As for the writer, the later expansions (Shadowbringers and I think also Endwalker) are from a writer who (rightly imo) received standing ovations at FFXIV Fanfest, so not everyone shares your opinion that another writer should be introduced
