According to Microsoft, DirectSR is intended to simplify the implementation of upscaling technology for developers. By means of a standardized interface, DLSS, FSR and XeSS, among other things, should be able to be implemented in games via DirectX.

Microsoft, together with Nvidia and AMD, shared more details about the Direct Super Resolution API during GDC 2024, writes 4Gamer. The recently announced technology should make it easier for game developers to automatically incorporate upscaling technology from different providers into their games. Until now, developers had to manually process shader code in a game per upscaling technique, which means that it varies per game whether the relevant techniques are supported.

Microsoft says it solves this by providing the DirectSR runtime with common code for the various upscaling techniques. Although the techniques mentioned all have advantages and disadvantages, many parameters would be fundamentally very similar. For example, DirectSR can already process algorithm inputs for motion vectors, camera jitter and colors of source images. In other words, Microsoft does the preprocessing for upscaling and preparing the stated parameters for the relevant techniques.

The company emphasizes that there will be no standardized specifications for upscaling, but a more standardized way of processing the different techniques in games. This should work on both GPUs and npus and regardless of the hardware requirements of certain technologies. For example, DLSS requires Nvidia’s Tensor cores. There is currently no release date for the DirectSR API. Developers should soon be able to start working with a beta version of the technology.
