After 2 years of postponement due to corona, the Maryland Classic finally took place. The race is part of the UCI ProSeries and is the highest qualified one-day race in the US, as there are no WorldTour races there.

194 km were put on the riders in the state of Maryland, on their way to the largest city, Baltimore. The first part of the race went up and down, the second part flattened out and the runner rolled out for a sprint.

He got there too, but not with the whole pack. Soon a large leading group with a lot of strong riders drove away, the good flight had already left. At more than 100 km from the finish, the lead was 4 minutes and teammates Vanmarcke and Biermans had to make do with Cort Nielsen, Powless, Piccolo, Balmer, Schultz, Simmons, Skuijns, Zukowsky, Lozano and Oyola.

The lead of the 12 escapees grew more and more, the peloton with fast men Matthews, Groenewegen and Nizzolo was ready for the effort.

On the local circuit it rained attacks at the front in the final, Vanmarcke, Skujins, Powless and Zukowsky got away. The Belgian tried a solo, but was caught. Piccolo returned and wanted to go up and over, but it turned into a sprint of five. Vanmarcke went from afar and kept up his effort.

His joy was immense.
