Nino Schurter is an absolute grand master on his mountain bike, but the Swiss cannot turn everything he touches into gold.
Schurter became world champion for the 10th time last week and has also won the World Cup in Val di Sole for the 8th time, but the Swiss cannot finish this season with dessert.
Schurter has been on par with Julien Absalon, another icon in MTB sport for some time now. The Swiss and the Frenchman have both won 33 World Cup motos, a 34th refuses to fall for Schurter for the time being.
The Swiss overall winner had started badly and was unable to keep up with Frenchman Titouan Carod.
Pierre de Froidmont ended his World Cup campaign in 16th place, Jens Schuermans was 21st.
In the women’s race, Alessandra Keller took the overall victory from Anne Terpstra. In Val di Sole, the Dutch handed over her lead in the standings.
An infection played tricks on her and Terpstra quickly faded into the background and eventually even gave up. Keller finished 7th and thus clinched the World Cup.
The last round of the season was won by world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot. After a typical solo, the French beat her compatriot Loana Lecomte and the Swiss Jolanda Neff.
