Club Brugge took a blow after it just missed the final of the Conference League on Wednesday. The switch has to be turned quickly.

After Fiorentina’s late equalizer, Hans Vanaken came very close to making it 2-1, which would force Club Brugge into extra time. However, it did not get that far and blue-black was eliminated just before the final.

The Italians deserved the final over two games more than Club Brugge, but the final was still within reach. In the middle of the play-offs and the title battle, a bitter pill to swallow for Blue-Black.

However, another important game for the title against Union awaits on Monday. Will the European elimination cause a backlash? “It is logical that it hurts, we are not going to experience this too much anymore. But by Monday this will be forgotten,” said Maxim De Cuyper.

Playoffs motivation for Vanaken and Mignolet

“We still have three matches to play for something, that’s where the focus should be now,” said Hans Vanaken. “Suppose we were fifth in the competition, then the disappointment might have been even greater because it was the only thing you were still playing for.”

“We still have everything in our own hands, so it is not difficult to motivate you for that. We can use the rest that we now have for Union, both physically and mentally,” Vanaken added.

“We now have to quickly turn the switch and focus on the competition. This elimination should not be a hindrance to the rest of our season. Life goes on. That’s what it’s all about,” said Simon Mignolet.
