Genk and Cercle Brugge rub their hands after Union SG’s cup win – Football News

--

Union Saint-Gilloise has won its prize. And that will more than likely have immediate consequences for a number of other teams. Genk and Cercle Brugge can already rub their hands.

Union won the Belgian Cup against Antwerp, which also brought about a change in the allocation of European places. The Belgian Cup entitles you to the Europa League.

Normally, third place in the competition – currently occupied by Union – entitles you to a ticket for the second qualifying round of the Europa League. This is the fourth best ticket awarded in Belgium.

By winning the Croky Cup for the first time in 110 years, RUSG has at least secured the third best ticket, namely the one that gives direct access to the Europa League play-offs, the fourth round, i.e. the last before the group stage.

The fifth of the competition in Europe?

If Union finishes in the top three (with an eight-point lead over Genk with three games to play, the chances are high), then the fourth in the competition will immediately be qualified for the second preliminary round of the Europa League.

This means that the fifth, namely Genk, Cercle Brugge or Antwerp, will compete against the winner of the Europe Play-off Ghent for a ticket to the second preliminary round of the Conference League. Genk (34 points) and Cercle Brugge (33 points) can dream of a direct European ticket.
