Schalke 04 will certainly also play football in the German second division next year. With a win (0-4) against red lantern VfL Osnabrück on the penultimate match day, coach Karel Geraerts’ team now also mathematically avoids relegation.

Thanks to the victory, the traditional club from Gelsenkirchen completes the forty-point mark and climbs to eleventh place in the rankings, where it is out of the danger zone. The gap with Wehen, number sixteen, the first team below the relegation zone, is eight points on two match days from the end.

Despite the rescue, Schalke will not speak of a successful season. The club of Geraerts and sporting director Marc Wilmots dreamed of returning to the highest German football level after tumbling out of the Bundesliga last year, but must instead prepare for at least another season in the second division.

It is still uncertain whether Karel Geraerts, who moved to Schalke in October last year, will still be at the helm of the German tradition club next season. “I still have a contract for one season, but a lot happened last season. First we must ensure its preservation and then we must all make a correct analysis,” Geraerst noted during a press conference at the end of April.
