Judging from the two games last week, it doesn’t look good for Antwerp in the cup final. Analyst Patrick Goots believes that the only remedy is a strong performance against arch enemy Club Brugge.

Mark van Bommel has said several times that those two confrontations against Union mean nothing for next Thursday’s match. “The cup final is a match that stands alone. And that is correct,” says Goots GvA.

“In such a final, in a completely different atmosphere, you can completely turn this situation around. But: then everything has to be right in the heads. I have been a footballer myself long enough. Those many defeats – now five in six games – hit hard and you undeniably take them with you.”

This weekend blue-black will visit the Bosuil. That is a match where normally sparks should fly. “That is why Antwerp now needs a reference match, at home against Club Brugge.”

“It is an agreement that the supporters hold in high regard. They will put their players on edge more than ever. It will not be with the handbrake on, believe me.”

Antwerp desperately needs the confidence boost. “If you deliver a good performance against the top favorite for the title, Antwerp can still travel to Brussels with confidence four days later. Ultimately, that is what is currently lacking. Now it seems as if this team cannot play football and that is of course not the case at all.”
