Shortly after the hour, with the score 0-1, it became quiet in the Cegeka Arena. Genk striker Tolu fell to the ground, although Club Brugge defender Brandon Mechele had a firm hold on him.

Mechele explained afterwards how the situation went. “That was really strange. I’m glad he’s doing well. I thought he wanted to grab me and push me away to take a quick free kick,” he began.

Tolu went down and referee Visser immediately blew his whistle. The caregivers sprinted to Tolu, who was briefly attended to on the field. Fortunately, it immediately became clear that Tolu was conscious.

“He kept hanging on to me and I just held him. Then he started to fall and I tried to put him down gently. Fortunately, he is doing well, it doesn’t bother me.”

The striker was immediately replaced by Andi Zeqiri, it was clear that he could not finish the match. “I was really freaked out, I didn’t really know what to do. My first thought was to put him down and see what happens. It was scary,” Mechele concludes.
