Georgia has surprisingly qualified for the European Football Championship next summer. It won in front of its own audience on penalties against Greece. After 120 minutes it was 0-0 in Tbilisi.

The Georgians won against Greece on penalties in front of their own audience in Tbilisi. No goals had been scored after regular playing time. That’s why penalties had to make the decision. At Georgia, Georges Mikautadze (ex-Seraing) missed his eleven meter, but on the Greek side, two players went wrong: Tasos Bakasetas and Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Greece came close to scoring in the first extra time, but Mavrapanos headed against the crossbar.

For Georgia, which is coached by the Frenchman Willy Sagnol (ex-Bayern Munich), it will be the first participation in an international tournament since the country’s independence in 1990. As the winner of path C, it ends up in group F with Turkey, Portugal and the Czech Republic.

Giorgi Chakvetadze (ex-Gent) and Levan Shengelia (ex-OHL) were in the starting line-up for Georgia. Star player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli) was injured.

Later in the evening, the last two European Championship tickets will be distributed in the matches Ukraine/Iceland and Wales/Poland.
