Domenico Tedesco has known for a long time that he cannot count on Thibaut Courtois. The goalkeeper dropped out for the European Championship and is now injured again, meaning his season is already over.

The general expectation is/was that Koen Casteels will be under the bar. However, that is still very much the question. Matz Sels is in goal against Ireland, because Casteels is once again not fit.

“There are still four friendlies before the European Championship starts. Who knows, Casteels can be in goal against England on Tuesday, but Sels sees his chance,” writes Het Nieuwsblad. “He dreams of surpassing his competitor in the hierarchy and of being in goal at the European Championships.”

After all, there are question marks behind Casteels. “The match against Ireland will be the eighth international match since Courtois resigned and Matz Sels will be in goal for the fifth time,” the newspaper said.

“Koen Casteels only defended the goal three times. That becomes a theme: very often when Casteels comes to the national team, he has a physical problem.”

“Sometimes it’s minor pain, other times it’s a stomach infection, now it’s his shoulder so he can’t play against Ireland…”

“That may be bad luck, but the label ‘brittle’ is increasingly being attached to his head. How much can you count on Casteels – physically and mentally?”
