Result FP2 Australia: Leclerc fastest after problem-free day, Verstappen second

--

The first day of the race weekend in Australia is a fact again. On the Albert Park track in Melbourne, the fastest time this time was recorded by Charles Leclerc. The top three Down Under was just completed by number two Max Verstappen and number three Carlos Sainz.

The second free practice in Melbourne started without Alexander Albon. Albon’s Williams was badly damaged in FP1 and the team was unable to repair the car in time. The chassis was even damaged and since Williams did not bring a spare chassis, Albon, or his teammate Logan Sargeant, will not be able to start in the race if the damage cannot be repaired.

Tinkering

Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez kicked off training. After a few minutes, almost everyone was on the track. However, Max Verstappen was still standing in the pit box with his hands on his hips. Red Bull was still tinkering with the RB20 and after 23 minutes Verstappen came out.

Once on the track, Verstappen was hindered by Guanyu Zhou. The Chinese Sauber driver got in the way while Verstappen was busy with a fast lap. The Aston Martins also looked fast. Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso felt great in the green cars. Verstappen was a little less happy with them, because Stroll got in the way in the last minutes of training.

There’s work to be done

Williams’ problems seemed to become much bigger for a moment. Logan Sargeant lost control of the car, but he managed to keep the car clear of the wall. Yuki Tsunoda also had some problems, because he feared damage to his floor. Lewis Hamilton had a horror session and he did not get further than the eighteenth (!) time. So there is still work to be done for Mercedes. Red Bull will also not be completely satisfied, because they have not yet managed to record the fastest time today.
