Five people were killed and six injured in New Zealand on Saturday after their boat collided with a whale and capsized. Mayor Chris Mackle of Kaikōura, where the incident took place off the coast, has announced this, according to New Zealand media.

He said there were 11 people on the ship. The six injured, including the skipper, were rescued and taken to hospital. Initially, a few people on board were still missing. The five fatalities were found aboard the ship.

Police divers were on the scene and local boats and divers are also helping with the rescue, the New Zealand Herald reports. Police are investigating and cannot determine the definitive cause of the capsizing yet. When asked whether a whale was responsible for the accident, the police spokesman declined to answer.
