Open Vld wants the next governments to replace civil servants with Artificial Intelligence (AI). That’s what ‘De Tijd’ writes. According to the party, there should be 10 percent fewer civil servants by 2030. “Everything that is administrative, repetitive or procedural can be perfectly replaced by artificial intelligence and automation,” says party chairman Tom Ongena.

“Today, 18.4 percent of the Belgian working population works for the government. That is a lot more than in the Netherlands and Germany, where 12 and 11 percent of the working population respectively work for the government,” says Ongena.

“We believe that everything that is administrative, repetitive or procedural can be perfectly replaced by artificial intelligence and automation. This not only means that we can do it with fewer civil servants, but above all that civil servants can focus on actually helping people. A government that is more customer-friendly and leaner,” the politician continues.

Ten percent

In concrete terms, the Liberals want 10 percent fewer civil servants by 2030. “In the United Kingdom, a large-scale study has shown that eight out of ten repetitive tasks that civil servants perform on a daily basis can be replaced by artificial intelligence,” says Ongena.

In particular, the party is considering AI helpdesks, automatic allocation of rights, following up on applications, automating licensing procedures and recommendations, using robots against phishing, electronic file creation, smart cameras, and so on. In addition, according to Ongena, AI must be given a central place in education and healthcare.
