Cian Uijtdebroeks got through the gravel stage of the Giro d’Italia well. The wearer of the white youth jersey finished in the first peloton including classification leader Tadej Pogacar. “I really liked it,” says the Belgian on the Visma | website Lease a Bike.

“I had fun today. I didn’t really have the rankings in mind, I just set my mind to zero. Who knows, maybe I’ll ride Strade Bianche in the future. I really enjoyed myself. Hopefully that will also be the case tomorrow in the time trial. So far everything is going well for me in this Giro. I can’t complain about that. Tomorrow I’m going to drive as fast as I can and I’ll see what that will be worth.”

After six days of racing, Uijtdebroeks is in fourth place in the general classification. He is 55 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar. Alex Baudin, currently his closest opponent in the youth classification, follows at 45 seconds from Uijtdebroeks. Luke Plapp took back some time today and is now a full minute behind the Belgian.

Valter: “Good business done”
Attila Valter was the one who could support Uijtdebroeks for the longest time in the final. “I put a lot of energy into the start of this stage,” admits the Hungarian. “It was an intense start. The second part of the ride was also very tough. I had to let go a few times, but I always returned to character. This way I could assist Cian. I felt that at the end of the ride I was not the only one suffering. We have done good business with a view to Cian’s ranking. He got through his first gravel ride of his life in a good way.”
