In the Mexican state of Zacatecas, in the north of the country, nine bodies were recovered in the town of Morelos on Wednesday. The Public Prosecution Service in the state announced this on Wednesday afternoon. A day earlier, nine lifeless bodies were also found in a neighboring town.
Zacatecas has seen a sharp increase in violence after several suspected criminals were recently arrested there. In a press release, the Public Prosecution Service announced that the nine victims that were found were all men. No further details are known.
Of the nine bodies found Tuesday, five victims have been identified. Their bodies were transferred to their relatives.
Fresnillo and Morelos are on an important drug smuggling route to the United States. Two major drug gangs, the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, are both trying to consolidate their control over the area.
