Club Brugge failed to reach the final of the Conference League. They took a light penalty ten minutes before the end.
Club Brugge was pushed back by Fiorentina in the second half. The Italians scored in the first half and twice more in the second half. Ten minutes before the end, Fiorentina were awarded a penalty.
Brandon Mechele raised his leg high in the box, the falling and heading Nzola hit his head against Mechele’s knee. The ref immediately pointed to the spot, Beltran didn’t hesitate and kicked in.
Mignolet lashes out after a light penalty
What did they think of that penalty at Club Brugge? “It’s a detail. I have to look at those images again carefully,” coach Nicky Hayen said afterwards. “It’s a shame that such a detail decides such a match because he doesn’t even see it coming.”
Was the penalty light? “Light or not, penalty is penalty,” Hans Vanaken responded. “From where I was standing he heads (Nzola, ed.) and Mechele just wants to kick or block him. And then he falls with his head on his knee.”
Simon Mignolet was much stricter in his assessment. “I don’t understand why he wants to decide the two matches with a penalty. Yes, maybe there is contact and Mechele makes a mistake. But there were so many matches.”
“Then he had to whistle at least 200 fouls tonight,” Mignolet continued. “They would never whistle this in England. And in Europe, something like this does not have to decide a semi-final.”
