He never pays for the hairdresser and is a super fan of ‘FC De Kampioenen’. In the podcast ‘Gossip Guy’ we get to know Thibau Nys (21) in a different way: the man next to the bicycle. “I think it’s important to have a personality, to stand for something.”
The podcast was recorded in the week after the Cyclo-Cross World Championships, a while before Nys won his impressive victory in the Tour de Romandie. So he doesn’t talk about that, but it was also not the intention to talk much about the race.
Podcast maker Ender Scholtens admits that he is not an avid follower of cycling. This soon becomes apparent when he asks Nys if he has ever used doping. “What the fuck?”, the rider responds in astonishment, although he can laugh about it. “I am baptized, yes.”
Paranoia
Nys even admits that he is quite “paranoiac” about not ingesting banned products. “For example, nasal spray is not allowed. Recently my friend (Dutch Anna Eikendal, ed.) also suffered from a cold sore above her lip and she had to apply cortisone ointment there. I didn’t kiss her for a week.”
FC the champions
Nys is the son of cyclo-cross legend Sven and his mother Isabelle is a hairdresser. “No, I don’t have to pay for the hairdresser. “It used to be, but not anymore since Mom has a hair salon,” he causes hilarity in the studio.
Scholtens understands less that he is a super fan of FC De Kampioens. “I’m not proud of that, but I’m certainly not ashamed of it either,” says Nys. “Watching FC De Kampioenen gives me a very relaxed feeling, it feels like coming home. I think I’ve seen every episode maybe 30 or 35 times and I’m even in a chat group with other famous fans like Niels Destadsbader, Guga Baúl and Conner Rousseau.”
Nys concludes by saying that he does not want to become a gray mouse, because according to him there are quite a few like that in the race. “I think it’s important to have a personality, to stand for something. People should also be fans of you because of who you are, I think that is very important.”
