This year, Bart De Wever has been chairman of the N-VA for 20 years. De Wever called this a “privilege” at his party’s election conference today in Ghent. N-VA wants to be the alternative to a continuation of the current federal government, which is further reducing the budget at the expense of the Flemish. Only N-VA can ensure the turnaround, chairman Bart De Wever said today at the end of his party’s electoral conference. And if voters give N-VA a strong mandate, De Wever is prepared to become Prime Minister.

In his speech at his party’s election conference, De Wever said that “our prosperity is at stake”. “Belgium will soon have to pay more annually in interest on its debts than the collected budget of the police, justice and defense combined,” he said. “The hard-working Flemish is head and shoulders the most plumed chicken of all. A single working Flemish person pays up to 58 percent in direct taxes, and he or she then has to pay taxes on everything in the very expensive shopping cart.”

According to the N-VA chairman, “the Vivaldi policy has organized a huge transfer from working people to non-working people, not coincidentally the largest voter group of the Parti Socialiste”. He quoted the song of folk singer Juul Kabas, ‘they are fools who work’. “Nowhere in the developed world is the difference between working and not working financially smaller than here.” That difference must be at least 500 euros net, according to De Wever. He pointed to the Vivaldi coalition and more specifically to the PS and its chairman Paul Magnette as the main culprits. De Wever summarized the PS program as “much more social spending and many more taxes”.

Prime Minister himself

“Our research department counted more than 10 billion in new taxes in their program.” He spoke to the PS chairman about this. “’It’s a little more,’ he laughed. And he did not even attempt to contradict the fact that the north will have to pay 70 to 80 percent of this,” the N-VA chairman said about that conversation. “Well: not with us, never with the N-VA. Done with Vivaldi, done with squeezing and laughing at the hardworking Flemish, done with governing without a Flemish majority,” De Wever added.

Finally, he again expressed his fear that “the bed is being spread for a new government with a Flemish minority, a Vivaldi 2 that will be even more dominated by the French-speaking left.” The Antwerp mayor and N-VA chairman also reiterated that he does not rule out becoming prime minister of our country himself. “On June 9, the Flemish Vivaldi parties will earn exactly what they denied the Flemish: wages for their work. Or in other words: a crushing defeat. If the N-VA receives a strong mandate from the Flemish voter, the N-VA will participate in governance. Then I will be a candidate to lead the next federal government myself.”

He gave his own party’s program in a nutshell. “The budget must be in order, people who go to work must always earn at least 500 euros net more, social policy must become much fairer, the nuclear phase-out law must finally be scrapped, investments in security and defense must increase, and migration policy should be based on the Australian model.” And to achieve all this, he believes, confederalism is necessary. The N-VA chairman thus completed the circle.
