A young lady spent 36 hours in intensive care after getting coffee from a vending machine at Mallorca airport. The cup contained insects, some of which she accidentally swallowed. That led to a strong allergic reaction. “The doctors say I was lucky,” the victim responded to the Spanish newspaper ‘Ultima Hora’.
The strange incident took place last Monday around 10:30 am. The woman (21), who works for an airline, then got coffee from the machine together with some colleagues.
Immediately she noticed a strange taste. When she stirred the cup with a spoon, to her dismay she fished out some insects.
Anaphylactic shock
“Ten minutes after drinking it, I started feeling sick,” the girl testified from her hospital bed. Her face began to swell and breathing became increasingly difficult.
Fortunately, the medical services at the airport immediately understood what was going on. The young lady had suffered anaphylactic shock due to a strong allergic reaction. Such an emergency can even be fatal if action is not taken quickly.
Complaint
The woman was therefore immediately given a syringe with adrenaline. She was then rushed to the hospital emergency room. “I’m lucky to be alive, the doctors there told my friend,” said the victim.
Her family has now filed a complaint against the airport. According to them, the machine was poorly maintained by the staff. The device itself is subjected to a thorough examination.
