Security and terror experts warn of the danger of terrorists committing attacks with drones. These unmanned devices are cheap, technically undemanding, quickly available and can be operated remotely. Nevertheless, they can cause many victims. This is feared in France and Germany, where the Olympic Games and the European Football Championship will take place this summer.

The use of drones in a military context has increased explosively in recent years, partly due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. This includes high-tech combat drones such as the Shahed 107 that Iran is developing for Russia. But Ukraine is also achieving success with cardboard drones that are “easier to assemble than IKEA furniture”. The Houthi rebels in Yemen also use drones to attack international shipping in the Red Sea.

Terror experts fear that the massively increased use of drones will also inspire terrorists targeting the West. This could allow them to cause victims at mass events such as the European Football Championship in Germany next summer or the Olympic Games in France.

“Drones are becoming one of the biggest problems,” warns Andreas Roßkopf (51) of the German police union in ‘Bild’. He calls for a “nationwide flight ban for drones throughout Germany before, during and shortly after the European Championships.”

Islamic State

He receives support from the Austrian terror expert Nicolas Stockhammer. “The technology has become more readily available. This increases the risk that terrorists will use them.” He already sees plans for this emerging in relevant discussion groups or forums. According to the terror expert, IS was already using drones in attacks.

French Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin also emphasizes the danger of drones in future terrorist threats. “The fight against drones is very important,” he recently stated on ‘BFMTV’. “It is undoubtedly the attack of tomorrow, a drone loaded with explosives.”

France already has experience with security against drone attacks. For example, during the previous Football World Cup, the country sent 140 agents to Qatar to help in the fight against drones. According to ‘Actu’, the anti-drone section of the French police has devices with which they can pick up the signal of drones and block the devices, causing them to hang or be returned to their senders.

SkyWall

The French police also have the spectacular weapon ‘SkyWall’. This allows you to shoot down a drone neutralized in the air with a net launcher. Thanks to a parachute, the drone, which is captured in a net, can even make a fairly soft landing. Such a device was also deployed in our country during a NATO summit in Brussels. The Antwerp police also have such devices.
