Belgium will not immediately issue visas to Russian deserters, but our country hopes that a European position will be reached soon. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said this on Friday in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“Today, Belgium almost no longer issues visas to Russians, only for humanitarian reasons. That is our position so far. We are also not necessarily going to give visas to people who desert, but let’s see how we can reach a European consensus. I hope we can take a general position soon,” Prime Minister De Croo said.

On Thursday, the German government announced that it was prepared to receive deserters from the Russian army. “Anyone who courageously opposes Putin and thereby endangers themselves can apply for political asylum in Germany,” said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization on Wednesday to bolster the Russian army’s military clout in Ukraine. Thousands of people then tried to flee Russia. Protests also broke out in several places, leading to at least 1,300 arrests.
