Flemish Minister of Economy Jo Brouns (CD&V) has developed a framework within which the government can take measures to support Flemish companies in the midst of the energy crisis. The minister himself announced this. “We have to safeguard our competitiveness and employment. Each government must ask the question from its own finality: what can we do to ease the bill for our families and companies?

Because countries such as France and Germany have already taken measures to support their companies, Flanders cannot be left behind, says Brouns. After consultation with numerous stakeholders, the Minister has therefore developed a framework to provide support to the most affected companies. The minister hopes to give concrete form to this as soon as possible with the Flemish government.

The consultations are underway and are linked to budget discussions, which should be completed when Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA) makes his government’s September statement in parliament on September 26. “But as far as we are concerned, it can go faster,” said Brouns’ spokesperson about the support measures.

Brouns opts for a “two-track approach”, whereby the energy efficiency of the companies involved is increased and part of the increased energy costs is compensated. Furthermore, the support measures must be temporary and targeted, ie only for companies that suffer an operational loss due to an exceptional increase in energy costs. Moreover, the measures are linked to specific conditions, which means that the companies involved must fully commit to the transition to renewable energy and maintain their production.
