Kringwinkel Hageland, Kringwinkel ViTeS and EcoWerf searched for the Kringchampion for the second time at the end of March. 29 cities and municipalities from the Leuven/East Brabant region participated. The city or municipality whose residents donated the most kilograms of reusable goods per inhabitant to the Kringwinkel on average between March 18 and 31 won the competition and the title ‘Kringchampion 2024’.

After an exciting battle, the score is known: the city of Landen is the 2024 Circle Champion, the city of Diest finishes an honorable second and the municipality of Oud-Heverlee ends up in third place. The municipalities of Haacht and Geetbets complete the top 5 respectively.

“The City of Landen and its residents have clearly understood the reuse message from EcoWerf and Kringwinkel,” says Maarten Vandegaer, sales manager of Kringwinkel Hageland. “They donated no less than 1.3 kilos of reusable goods per inhabitant through the various donation channels, which is a lot in a 14-day campaign period.”

“A total of almost 290,000 kilos of reusable goods were collected in the 29 participating cities and municipalities between March 18 and 31,” adds Luc Daelemans, director of Kringwinkel ViTeS. “These are all conveniences that do not end up in the waste heap. We can only be happy with that.”

“EcoWerf is also satisfied with the result,” says Jonathan De Witte, general manager of EcoWerf. “In 2023, EcoWerf collected 437,000 kilograms of reusable goods at the recycling parks for Kringwinkel ViTeS and Kringwinkel Hageland. In this way, EcoWerf stimulates reuse, but also the local and regional employment of employees who are distanced from the labor market.”

Presentation of the Circle Champion trophy

On Wednesday, May 8, the city of Landen received the Kringchampion trophy. The cup consists entirely of Kringwinkel material and was specially made for this competition by social partner “People Made, a warm network of social economy and labor care initiatives”. Numbers two and three, Diest and Oud-Heverlee, were also honored by the three environmental partners.

“Today it is the City of Landen that will take home the top prize, but we would also like to take this moment to thank everyone who donates reusable items to the Kringwinkel,” concludes Maarten Vandegaer. “Thanks in part to our donors, we not only give ‘new happiness’ to things and the environment, but also to people. After all, all the goods collected help the Kringwinkels to realize their 3 goals – being good for the environment, combating deprivation, and offering tailor-made employment/training – on a daily basis.”
