A 56-year-old man drowned on Thursday afternoon in a pond on the Groeneweg in Machelen, near Zulte. There he wanted to help his dog who had fallen into the water. “A resident saw how the man suddenly went under,” the police said. The fire brigade brought the victim to dry land, but all help came too late.

LOOK. The tragedy happened along the Groeneweg in Zulte

The man was visiting an acquaintance with his dog along the Groeneweg in Zulte. There is also a pond at the back of the resident’s home. At around 2 p.m., the resident saw how the visitor jumped after his dog, which had fallen into the pond, and notified the emergency services. “The dog was able to get to the bank on its own, but the resident saw how his visitor went under,” says Commissioner Vincent Himpe of the Deinze-Zulte-Lievegem Police Zone.

Five divers immediately entered the water and were able to quickly locate the drowning person with a thermal camera and bring him to the surface

Neighbor of the scene of the tragedy

Thirty firefighters

A neighbor who lives right next to the highly secured and shielded domain suddenly saw the emergency services arriving en masse at her neighbor’s home. “With as many as thirty firefighters,” she says. “Five divers immediately went into the water and were able to quickly locate the drowning man with a thermal camera and bring him to the surface. Unfortunately, we heard afterwards he did not survive. The man is also said to have had a pacemaker and probably went into shock due to the cold water. A stupid accident because we noticed that the dog, a kind of hunting dog, could swim quite well,” says the witness. “We hardly have any contact with him the neighbor. We know that she is a single woman of around fifty years old. She lives on her own, we also don’t know who the visitor was.”

“Fire brigade divers found the body at the bottom of the pond and brought the victim to the surface. He was resuscitated on the spot, but all help came too late. The public prosecutor’s office was informed, but no further investigation was requested because the cause of death is clear. It was an unfortunate accident,” the police concluded.
