Boechout

At the start of the new cycling season, Den iceberg along the bicycle highway in Boechout presents a novelty. Not only cyclists and walkers can relax with an ice cream. Dogs can also taste ice cream.

Corona was the reason to set up a takeaway spot for ice creams and soft drinks in the Victor Heylenlei of Boechout four years ago. With its location right next to the busy Lier – Antwerp bicycle highway, it immediately attracted many cyclists and walkers to relax on the terrace with fresh farm ice cream.

In the meantime, Birgit Kriekemans has started her third season in Den IJsberg. “From April to the end of September, depending on the weather, I am open from Wednesday to Sunday. I scoop fresh farm ice cream and traditionally made sorbet. The sorbets are lactose-free. Not only passers-by have found my ice cream stall, the people of Boechout also come by for an ice cream or to take boxes of ice cream home,” says Birgit.

Over the years, she expanded her offering with traditional friscoes, fresh croque, boulettes and hot chocolate. From this season onwards there is a bigger novelty. “Passers-by have already ordered a small scoop of ice cream for their dog. However, the sugar makes ice cream not the healthiest for dogs. Because we also have a dog at home, I went looking for dog ice cream.”

For example, her attention fell on the young company Woofelicious, which recently started making dog ice cream. “The ice creams are a combination of water and a flavor. It is refreshing for the dogs and we can propose five flavors with mango, banana, watermelon, blueberry and strawberry. The nice names mean that owners can order a Wafftermelon or a Bluebarky from us, for example,” says Birgit. (fisp)

Info: The opening hours and all flavors can be found on the Den IJsberg website.
