A tram driver was injured in an accident between a tram and a car on Noorderplaats in Antwerp on Wednesday. The collision caused the tram to derail and disrupted tram traffic for hours.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. “A tram driving towards Eilandje hit a car in the side near Noorderplaats,” the police explain.

The driver of the tram was taken to hospital for evaluation. No one else was injured in the car or on the tram.

The impact caused the tram to derail. A technical team from De Lijn arrived on the scene, but the accident caused serious traffic disruption in the wider area. Tram lines 1 and 24 were disrupted in both directions, but all tram traffic was resumed around 8:20 PM
