Mustafa B. was sentenced to four years in prison in Antwerp on Monday. After an argument about a woman, he placed an explosive under his brother’s car and detonated it.

The police were sent to Beukenstraat in Borgerhout in June last year. At the scene it turned out that a parked car had been seriously damaged by an attack with a Cobra fireworks bomb. The owner said that he had a conflict with his brother and that he may have had something to do with the case. The brother in question, Mustafa B., appeared to have actually been driving around the vicinity of the attack on the night of the facts. He may have parked his car and then driven to Beukenstraat with a scooter. Camera images also showed someone moving like this and looking like B.. When B. was arrested a few months later, he confirmed that there had been an argument with his brother. “Because I had an affair with his wife,” he said. B. denied having anything to do with the explosion. He said he had received the devices to remotely control ignition mechanisms that were in his garage as collateral.

The court did not believe B.’s explanation and sentenced him on Monday to four years in prison and a fine of 2,000 euros. “His statement is unbelievable, there is no doubt that he was driving his car that night,” it said. “In a family dispute, he opted for serious violence by remotely detonating a car in a residential area. That increases the feeling of insecurity.”
