The Brussels Parliament decided during a closed session on Thursday morning not to revoke the parliamentary immunity of Bertin Mampaka Mankamba (MR).
The public prosecutor’s office had requested the termination in a 2014 file concerning the recruitment of employees in the office of then CDH minister Joëlle Milquet. In a secret vote, 39 MPs opposed the lifting of immunity, 22 were in favor. In the Parliament of French-speaking Brussels residents there were 34 and 18 members respectively.
The file, which the public prosecutor’s office opened in 2014, revolves around employees that then Minister of the Interior Joëlle Milquet (cdH, the predecessor of Les Engagés) allegedly recruited to her cabinet in order to use them for her election campaign at the time, which is not legally allowed. is permitted. Mampaka, her party colleague at the time, is said to have helped her recruit those employees.
Nothing wrong
The ex-cdH chairwoman has always denied the allegations and Mampaka also says that she has done nothing wrong and has not committed any infringement.
Bertin Mampaka, who was elected for CDH in 2019 but has since switched to the MR, previously expressed his dissatisfaction about the timing of the demand for his immunity to be lifted, in the middle of the election campaign.
During the joint Prosecutions Committee of the Brussels Parliament and the Parliament of French-speaking Brussels residents (Cocof), there was already a major division over the question of whether the public prosecutor’s request should be granted. A narrow majority, 6 to 5, rejected the request. (BELGA)
