Can new algorithms ensure that the quality of life in our cities increases? VIL, University of Antwerp, UHasselt, KU Leuven, fourteen companies and four cities are convinced that it is. In the STRAUSS research project, they will develop a series of algorithms and models to optimize logistics operations in cities.

The VIL project focuses on four important logistics flows within the city: waste collection, construction logistics, catering deliveries and home deliveries of groceries. The intention is to build algorithms that can be used for better planning of the logistics chain, both for companies and city authorities.

Limit negative effects of logistics

Unlike other similar efforts, these algorithms will specifically address the urban context and will take into account the measures taken by cities that have an impact on the logistics operations in their area, such as car-free zones, specific parking spaces or time windows for truck deliveries, a ban on certain vehicles in certain areas, etc.

More collaboration

The STRAUSS project also aims to promote cooperation between companies and cities. “The city of Hasselt wants to reduce the number of vehicle kilometers for freight transport in the city center by developing appropriate policy measures. This project will give us more insight into the impact of future measures we are considering. In concrete terms, a case regarding construction logistics will be developed in Hasselt. But as a city we are of course also interested in the results of the other flows,” says Yannick Fabbro, Traffic Manager at the City of Hasselt.

Project partners are VIL, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp and University of Hasselt.

Project participants: André Celis Building Materials, BD Logistics, Buildwise, Cegeka, Conundra, Ecowerf, E-llis, Horeca Logistics Services, Rebel, Renewi, Sodexo, TRI-VIZOR, Urbike, Vandebos General Construction Company, City of Hasselt, City of Mechelen, City of Antwerp and City of Leuven.

This project is financed by VLAIO.
