The Brussels fire brigade had to respond to a double arson in Argonnestraat in Sint-Gillis on Tuesday morning. When the crews arrived, flames were shooting out of a restaurant and a vehicle was also on fire a few meters away.

The residents of the apartments above the restaurant were able to reach safety in time. The building and vehicle burned down completely. According to fire brigade spokesman Walter Derieuw, there was no spillover and these were indeed two different fires. Police and public prosecutor’s office have started an investigation.

After ventilation and CO control, the residents were able to return to their homes. The restaurant’s utility connections were disconnected by Sibelga. The Brussels-South police zone set up a safety perimeter during the fire-fighting works and also managed the evacuation of residents.

“According to the initial findings, we can confirm that the police services were called at around 5.15 am for deliberate arson in Argonnestraat,” says Stefan Vandevelde of the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. “It would concern a business and a vehicle that caught fire. There were no casualties. Various investigations are ongoing, including analysis of the camera images. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.”
