Mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) is considering deploying a security firm to combat the phenomenon of ‘throwing over’ in the prison in Begijnenstraat. He can impose this on the federal government through an administrative measure by the mayor.

A major fight took place between inmates in the Antwerp prison last week. The reason was that strangers threw all kinds of things over the prison wall. Some detainees tried to obtain those goods, causing the riot to break out.

Vlaams Belang municipal councilor Filip Dewinter wanted a response from the mayor in the municipal council on these facts. De Wever has been working on an administrative measure for some time. He is initially thinking of necessary renovations to the building. In addition, something also needs to be done about the phenomenon of ‘throwing up’.

“This usually happens from the private parking lot of the prison’s rear neighbor,” says De Wever. “Deploying a security company for this parking lot can be included in the mayor’s administrative measure. I will soon be meeting with the prison management and the unions about this measure by the mayor.”
