UpdateA man was seriously injured in a shooting in the Brussels municipality of Schaarbeek on Sunday evening. This has now been confirmed by the Brussels North police. Video footage shows how the victim was left for dead on the terrace.
“The Brussels North police were called to a shooting on the terrace of a café on Joseph Brandstraat in Schaerbeek on Sunday evening, April 28, around 10:30 p.m.,” says police spokesperson Audrey Dereymaeker. “When emergency services arrived on scene, they found a man injured by gunfire. The police notified the public prosecutor’s office, which met with an investigating judge on the spot.”
Hit several times
When emergency services arrived, the victim, a 44-year-old man, was in critical condition. According to the first elements of the investigation, the victim was hit several times by bullets in the head and chest. According to RTL Info, the man was said to have been wearing a balaclava.

When we visited the cafe to find out more, the owners seemed a bit nervous and didn’t want to say much. Not incomprehensible since the neighborhood has recently been confronted with increasing violence. Recently, no fewer than 35 house searches took place in Schaarbeek, in the Navez district, as part of the fight against local drug trafficking. This resulted in the arrest of eighteen suspects, twelve of whom were detained. Police seized more than €120,000 in cash, 2.2 kilograms of cannabis and nine weapons during the operations.
Attempted homicide
The Brussels public prosecutor’s office has charged an investigating judge with attempted murder. The investigating judge arrived on the scene, accompanied by the Deputy Public Prosecutor and the laboratory of the Brussels Federal Judicial Police.
The investigation into the shooting is being led by the homicide department of the Brussels federal judicial police. They try to determine the precise circumstances of the incident and find the perpetrator(s). Due to the ongoing investigation, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office will not make any further comments on this case.
