Performances, two festivals and a free stage are some of the events organized on Friday and Saturday in Aartselaar, Kontich, Edegem, Hove and Mortsel. A semi-finalist from The Voice Kids will even be on stage in the Cultural Chapel of Kontich on Saturday.

Marieke Van Waes from Edegem just missed the final during the last edition. “That was a nice experience and participation has certainly opened doors to more performances. My Music-Word education at the Kunsthumaniora Antwerp also helps me in my dream of doing something with music later. The Voice Kids has made me discover that performing on stage actually suits me, but I can just as easily become a songwriter,” says Marieke.

She will perform in the Cultuurkapel on Saturday at 7 p.m. “Local Heroes is a great initiative to discover other music styles and artists. I will perform with a pianist and a guitarist to perform Dutch cabaret and some English pop music. I will also sing a few of my own songs. My preference is for Dutch-language music because I think the lyrics in the native language come through better. For me, both the music and the lyrics are important in songs.”

After Marieke Van Waes, it is up to the group Scarlet Jackdaw in the chapel to let the spectators listen to rock, blues and Americana. Also in Kontich, Sint-Rita College opens the doors of its famous Schoolrock Festival at 3:30 PM.

Platform for blues

Local Heroes starts in the southern edge on Friday evening with the first Blues Battle in CC Aartselaar. The new Knight Knight vzw starts at 8 p.m. Initiators David and Tom de Ridder promise to continue with their project after Friday: “The Blues Battle is more than just an event. It will be a starting point for a movement that will put blues music in the spotlight in the South Rand. Our ambition is to provide a platform for local talent and share the love of the blues with a broader audience. Together we hope to help this genre grow and thrive in our community.”

There will be a double celebration at High Mass in Edegem on Saturday. The stage café with brewery is celebrating its birthday and will be linking this to its first beer fair from 2 p.m., while a new edition of the music festival will take place at 4 p.m. Under the Tower begins. The bill features the jazz of Pepper Room, the surf of The Arousals, the soul, R&B and pop of Alison Jutta and finally the funk of Jackson Jeffrey Jackson.

Later in the day, around 8 p.m., fans of heavy punk and metal are welcome at the Tjok youth center in Hove. The special edition of Trash Cassette invites the bands Gloom, Minding Dolls, Asermoietuituit and Burning Mike & The Firefighters to the stage.

Free stage

The Mortsel youth meeting center makes it a long evening and night during a free stage. From 7 p.m., bands, solo artists, rappers and DJs will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. The Mortsel section of Local Heroes closes the music day in the southern edge of Antwerp at 3 o’clock.
