A large fire broke out at the Snoeys recycling center in Brecht on Thursday evening. The fire brigade is on site en masse. “The fire is under control, but the extinguishing work will take some time.”

At around 9:10 p.m., the emergency services received a call about an industrial fire on the Vaartkant Rechts in Brecht. Video footage shows a large glow of spreading flames at the Snoeys recycling center. The fire is accompanied by a huge plume of smoke.

“It concerns a large mountain of household waste that caught fire at a waste processing company,” says Tina Boënne, spokesperson for the Rand Fire Department. “Fortunately the fire is under control. The mountain of waste is surrounded by four concrete walls so that the fire cannot spread. However, this involves a very large amount of burning waste, which means that the extinguishing work will take some time.”

Taxandria emergency zone was the first on the scene. Fire stations Brecht, Oostmalle, Westmalle, Wuustwezel, Zoersel and Sint-Antonius are also present. The cause is still unknown and the fire brigade is not aware of any injuries.

The fire brigade asks local residents who suffer from odor nuisance due to smoke to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off the ventilation systems.
