More than two years ago, café ‘den Tripel’ opened its doors on Nieuw Zuid with much fanfare. “The new popular café in the city” was intended to counter the perception that there is no room for a traditional pub in Nieuw Zuid. The case did not follow that plan and in the summer of 2023, den Tripel closed its doors permanently.

“We never came to den Tripel. But every time we walked our dog, our eyes fell on the beautiful interior,” says George. The Northern Irishman has been living in Nieuw Zuid with his partner Barth for almost two years. “In all that time, we have learned one thing: when night falls, all life disappears from this neighborhood.”

When the building became available for rent, the duo decided to take matters into their own hands. Barth and George put themselves forward to breathe new life into the building. “I have been retired for a while and a new challenge was more than welcome. When the owner announced that we were the new operators, I was thrilled.”

In recent months, the duo has been working enthusiastically towards the opening. “We gave the interior our own twist and transformed the café into a cozy bar,” says George. The menu will also be thoroughly updated make over. “In addition to drinks, customers are also served food. Pub grubas we say so beautifully on the other side of the Channel.”

“We also provide magazines and board games and there will always be good pictures of, say, Ella Fitzgerald, George Michael or Boy George,” says the new manager. “Every now and then a party will take place, although local residents certainly do not have to fear nightclub scenes.”

“Our main goal is that people from the neighborhood feel comfortable here. We want to breathe new life into the catering industry in Nieuw Zuid and give the neighborhood a heart and soul. Hopefully new cases will be added soon, because I cannot possibly welcome all residents at the same time,” George concludes with a laugh.

George’s Bar is open daily, Sunday to Wednesday from 10am to 10pm and Thursday to Saturday from 10am to midnight.
