A fire broke out in the Europacentrum residence on Van Iseghemlaan in Ostend on Tuesday evening. The residents of the affected apartment on the eighteenth floor were able to escape in time, but were taken to the hospital as a precaution. About thirty other residents were preventively evacuated.
The fire started on Tuesday night just after 11 p.m. in the Europacentrum residence apartment building in Van Iseghemlaan in Ostend. An apartment on the eighteenth floor partly caught fire. The fire may have been caused by a heating element that came too close to the curtains, although this cannot be confirmed with certainty.
Evacuation
The affected residents were able to escape in time, but were taken to hospital for evaluation. About thirty fellow residents were preventively evacuated. “The residents of the affected apartment cannot return home this evening,” says Mayor Bart Tommelein, who was present. “We will see on Wednesday what options are available for them in terms of care.”
The fire brigade from Emergency Zone I quickly got the fire under control, allowing the evacuated residents to return home quickly. The street was closed to all traffic for a while during the intervention.
