The green verge between the Ring and the Singel at the Borgerhout driveway towards Ghent is extremely polluted. There is a lot of waste spread over a length of about 150 meters. Alderman for City and Neighborhood Maintenance Els van Doesburg (N-VA) informed ATV that contact has already been made with the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV).

“A typical phenomenon of ‘We drive onto the highway and don’t wait until we get home. What we no longer need, we simply throw out the window,” Van Doesburg calls the fly-tipping that the ATV editors found between the Ring and the Singel in Borgerhout.

The Antwerp alderman is not pleased with the filth left behind by people in the green area, but says that there is little she can do from the city itself. “Because this piece of land falls under Flemish jurisdiction, the AWV must come and clean it up. We are also going to tell them that they need to maintain those roadsides better. We expect citizens to keep their own domain clean, just like other authorities.”

Both the city of Antwerp and AWV sent a team to the green strip on Tuesday. Ultimately, AWV will clean everything up during the course of next week.
